The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
